April 7, 2018 Feasting on Insects Jon Van Loon Longboat Key, FL, USA March 6, 2018 442 This picture is of Ibis on the lawn near our Condo in Florida. They are classified as shore birds but are commonly found inshore feeding on insects. Not uncommonly strangely they can be seen roosting on hydro wires. I enjoy the fact that they are relatively unfazed by humans and hence can be enjoyed for close observation. 0 1-1

March 25, 2018 Hairy Cow Pea Jon Van Loon Lido Key, Sarasota, FL, USA March 2, 2018 9599 This tiny perennial vine with the strange name grows in the sandy areas adjacent to beaches in central Florida. Its delicate small yellow flowers are somewhat suggestive of an early spring bloom, such as the Winter Aconite, in Southern Ontario. 0 1-1

March 10, 2018 Sunsets Fiery Afterglow Jon Van Loon Longboat Key, FL, USA February 15, 2018 13768 Some nights If you are patient enough and the conditions are right, many minutes after the sun has set a spectacular afterglow such as this shown in my picture surprisingly develops. On this night most of the sunset watchers had already gone home and missed this eye catching spectacle. 0 1-1

March 9, 2018 So Decorative yet so Poisonous Jon Van Loon Longboat Key, FL, USA March 8, 2018 13258 Oleander native to much of the warmer climates of Europe, is grown in similar climates around the world because of its beauty. It grows in bush form and hence is common as a flowering hedge. Shown in this Florida picture in its less common red form it is most often seen in pink. But beware of using this plant as a bouquet or in fact handling this plant at all without protection because every part of Oleander is extremely poisonous. 0 1-1

February 26, 2018 Complex of Colours Jon Van Loon Longboat Key, FL, USA February 3, 2018 10811 This sunset shot over the Gulf of Mexico has a very interesting and complex blend of colours. This sky preceded a weather front that brought an evening of light rain. At this time of year on Florida's mid Gulf Coast days are commonly bright, sunny and warm with very few days of rain. However it is not uncommon for rain to pass through during the overnight. 0 1-1
